Pre-periodizing a tweet

Never mind the title. It is what sells the blog post. When we were on version 2 of Twitter (we are now operating on version 4 AKA #NewNewTwitter), someone on the TL (no names can be remembered now and even the tweet) said that if you write a tweet and put a period before it, it will be highly displayed on the "Twitter front page". And I saw a couple of people use it. This exploded all over after that simple announcement. Version 3 (#NewTwitter) also saw people tweeting with the period before the start of the tweet. Now with version 4, there is no front page at all and people are still using the period. My question is, what does it hope to achieve?
